Grimes.
The Lowdown: Canadian oddball makes catchy pop.
Best Track: ‘Oblivion’. Dark, addictive and frustratingly impossible to describe. Sugary-sweet vocals conflicting with the menacing refrain “see you on a dark night”… make it an intriguing listen.
Honorable Mention: ‘Vanessa’. Playful wonky-pop.
Kylie Minogue — ‘Come Into My World’ (Fischerspooner Mix)
Shout out to Kylie Minogue, still a badass after 25 years in the business. How is she not a household name in the US?
Zola Jesus- ‘I Can’t Stand’ (2010).
Keep playing this on my itunes. Makes me feel like I’m in a movie and about to die in a slo-mo gunfight
Delilah.
The Lowdown: 21 year-old songstress Paloma Stoeker serves a mix of electronica, atmospheric pop and R&B. Hotly tipped to break through in the coming year.
Best Track: First single ‘Go’ is a seductive electronic slow-jam incorporating samples from Chaka Khan classic ‘Ain’t Nobody’.
Honorable Mention: ‘Love You So’. A brilliant pounding pop track, imagine Lana Del Rey vs. Massive Attack on steroids.
Debut album ‘From The Roots Up’ out late July.
AlunaGeorge.
The Lowdown: Both hailing from East-London, ‘AlunaGeorge’ formed in 2011 via a mutual appreciation of each others tunes online.
Best Track: ‘You Know You Like It’ is a 90’s throwback in the best way. A sound reminiscent of girl groups 702 and En Vogue but with a new twist, this is what should’ve happened when R&B music decided to go electronic.
Honorable Mention: ‘Put Up Your Hands’. A post-garage quiet riot. Vocals from Aluna Francis give a soulful edge to Reid’s sporadic 2-step production.
Had a kick-ass day today.. so I’m listening to a kick-ass song. I’ll never get tired of this one.
TV On The Radio- ‘Wolf Like Me’ Live on Letterman (2006).
THEESatisfaction.
The Lowdown: Afro-Eccentric soul-funk duo. Fond of random capitalization.
Best Track: ‘QueenS’ is an impossibly cool tune, perfect for summer. The track is accompanied by a hazy Dream Hampton-directed video guiding the listener through a bohemian New York apartment gathering.
Honorable Mention: ‘Sweat’. This Erykah Badu-esque slow jam could be lifted right off a blaxploitation classic.
Purity Ring.
The Lowdown: Canadian duo on the edge of breaking through. Megan James provides the haunting vocals while Corin Roddick takes care of the beats.
Best Track: ‘Obedear’. Chilled out dream-pop extravaganza of a track. A hip-hop drum loop similar to Snoop’s ‘Drop It Like It’s Hot’ makes this an intriguing listen.
Honourable Mention: ‘Lofticries’ with an unexpectedly heavy beat that wouldn’t be out of place on a Kid Cudi album, James’ sweet vocals captivate once again.
SBTRKT.
The Lowdown: Camera shy DJ Aaron Jerome produces an electronic lo-fi epic. SBTRKT blends a variety of urban genres resulting in a truly unique sound. Rarely seen performing live without an African inspired tribal mask.
Best Track: ‘Hold On’ ft. Sampha is a brilliant soulful track driven by subtle pounding drums. Well worth a listen.
Honorable Mention[s]: ‘Wildfire’ ft. Yukumi Nagano [Little Dragon]. Canadian rapper Drake drops a verse on the remix.
‘Living Like I Do’ ft. Sampha. A real album highlight.
